Arrange your envelope categories in the order you want them before you set up the physical system — bills first, sinking funds at the back, or however fits the way you actually spend.

Why Envelope Order Matters

A binder full of good intentions still fails if the categories you need most are buried in the back. Putting fixed bills and top-priority Needs up front means the money you truly can't skip gets stuffed first, every payday, without having to dig. Sinking funds and long-term savings usually work fine near the back, since you're topping those up rather than pulling from them constantly.

A Suggested Starting Order

Hit "Reset to Suggested Order" above for a sensible default: rent or mortgage first, then core Needs like groceries and utilities, then variable Wants, then sinking funds and savings at the back. It's just a starting point — rename, reorder, add, or remove sleeves until it matches how you actually spend. New to the method itself? Start with the Cash Stuffing 101 guide, or plan your category amounts first in the Zero-Based Budget Planner.
